When Reed Richards finished his experimental starship and wanted to take it on an unsanctioned test flight, his college buddy (and former USAF pilot) Ben Grimm agreed to fly it. Together with Richards' girlfriend Sue Storm and her brother Johnny, Ben and Reed launched into space, where they were exposed to unprecedented levels of cosmic radiation.Marvel Source
The radiation triggered mutagenic changes in each of the four passengers. In Grimm's case, he became a brutish creature with orange, rocky skin. Sue's description of him as a "thing" stuck as his heroic nickname, and Thing became a founding member of the Fantastic Four.
This is my simple and hopefully helpful guide to the Thing. I started with him as my initial hero narrowly edging out Storm as in the personal rankings of Marvel Heroes Storm is in the top 10 but Thing is still higher. (Cause his Aunt Petunia says "Ooohrah!".)
Since I suck at formatting and formulaic math stuff I am going to keep it simple. Please feel free to shoot me down or back me up if you know the numbers and how to apply them. To my best ability to observe this seems to be the best time I have had with Thing since they killed his life as a no-DPS tank with the recent patches. That kinda concept bugged me as it would seem that a guy made of cosmic organic rock who lifts 75 tons would hit anything a tiny bit harder than....anyone else basically. Oh and would be MUCH more durable than the likes of Cyclops, Daredevil. or the Punisher. It took effort, but I am pleased with my results. Which I will likely change when the next big changes roll out in the next big patch.
So lets start with the big issues to note them and get out of the way.
1. Thing is not the following: Hulk, Blob, Sasquatch, Box, Thunderball, Rhino, or Juggernaught. He is a decorated Marine Officer and Top rated test pilot who lead one of the toughest gangs in New York. He is combat trained and reflex honed from his military training which only added to his very substantial street brawling prowess. To quote Mavel.com : "Ben is an exceptionally skilled and experienced pilot, proficient with many varieties of both conventional and exotic aircraft, and was also trained as an astronaut. He is uniquely gifted in the art of hand-to-hand combat (a skill Ben honed long before he became the Thing), though his fighting style tends to be a rather loose brawling technique all his own. In his youth, Ben was a talented football player." Thing more than most also likes to use his environment as improvisational weaponry. In addition Thing can apply wrestling techniques. He also likes to throw things that are large and to impressive effect. His powers do a poor job of representing him in every way on every level. Especially Granite D. and [Fill in the blank] Aura.
2. Thing is in every sense a tank. His ability to simply refuse to fall down, to shield others, to anchor his allies and blunt his foes are key aspects that make his stand out in a world filled with big tanky muscle types. To take this away from him with broken taunts and very limited powersets (Defense\Health passive or Defence\Health aura or Constant buff or Mitigating damage shield ) is to devalue his role. He will never be the best DPSer nor should he be. This also means he will never be a paper cup in comparison to anyone who has normal skin. Comic book tanks have solid damage. Anyone who can lift 50+ tons gets the benefit of hitting things really hard. Those big guys get focused by the other team for the unavoidable mess that comes if he's not stopped.
Ok, that covered my concerns. now to the powers. I’m listing them based on my spending and will go through and cover why I have this power or why I don’t use this power after.
